The brand was founded in 2002 by Bill Bishop, inspired by their large Airedale terrier, Blue. When Blue was diagnosed with cancer, Billy Bishop Sr. and his two sons researched with animal nutritionists and veterinarians, ultimately developing Life Protection, the company's first line of pet food for furry friends.
According to Blue Buffalo's US website, all of the company's pet food and treats are made in US factories, with the exception of some of the brand's treats, which are co-produced in Ireland. Blue Buffalo is now the top natural pet food brand in the US.
